.JOINT INVESTIGATION LEADS TO TWO ARRESTS FOR 10 VEHCLE THEFTS
Kenner- A joint investigation by the Kenner Police Department and Louisiana State Police Insurance Fraud / Auto Theft unit has resulted in the arrest of two individuals for 10 vehicle thefts. Police believe the individuals arrested may be responsible for additional vehicle thefts in the metropolitan area.
On Thursday, May 3, 2012, Corey Porter, 24, of 724 27th Street, Kenner, and Leonard Lewis, 26, of 2752 Jasper Street, Kenner, was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle 10 counts, for incidents occurring within the City of Kenner. In confessions that detectives obtained from both Lewis and Porter, it was learned that both would either check the Kenner Code Enforcement listings in the Times Picayune newspaper for abandoned / tagged vehicles, or, they would also ride around the metropolitan area looking for vehicles that appeared abandoned that they could sell for scrap. After finding the vehicles, both would then utilize a tow dolly attached to Lewis’ Ford Expedition, to trailer and tow the vehicle. The vehicles would then be towed to Quick Recovery Salvage, in Belle Chasse where the stolen vehicles would be sold for scrap (between $200 and $600 a vehicle). Records obtained from Quick Recovery Storage (who are cooperating with the investigation), revealed that both Lewis and Porter has scrapped 25-30 vehicles at the location (this is the reason police believe they are responsible for additional vehicle thefts not reported to law enforcement).
Police have linked both Lewis and Porter to the following vehicles that were reported stolen between December 2011 and April 2012. The vehicle thefts were reported in the 2600 block of Panama Street, 2200 block of Richland Street, 2800 block of Greenwood Street, 2300 block of Marietta Street, 2100 block of 17th Street, Hamlet Street (2 vehicles), 600 block of Chablis Drive (2-vehicles), the 2600 block of Aberdeen (all in Kenner), and one reported stolen on January 10, 2012, in New Orleans.
The investigation continues. Both Lewis and Porter remain in custody, no bond has been set. Additional charges are pending.
