New Orleans man booked in attempt carjacking / attempted vehicle theft / an aggravated assault on police

Kenner-A New Orleans man has been arrested after he attempted to steal a vehicle from a rental return lot, attempted to carjack occupants of another vehicle, then attempted to remove a rifle from a vehicle during a police confrontation with the suspect.

On Sunday, February 3, 2013, Brian Porter, 36, of 2823 St. Antony Street, New Orleans, entered the Enterprise Car rental lot on property adjacent to the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, located at 400 Rental Boulevard, Kenner.  There Porter entered a vehicle which keys were left inside the vehicle.  Porter was able to take the vehicle and attempted to find a way out of the gated parking lot.  Finding no way to exit, Porter attempted to exit the parking lot through the entrance, at which time the security strips punctured all four tires and a metal security barrier automatically deployed.  Porter collided with the barrier causing moderate front end damage to the vehicle he was attempting to steal.

Porter then exited the vehicle he was attempting to steal carrying two rifles.  Porter approached an occupied van and demanded the vehicle.  After an unsuccessful attempt to take the occupied van, Porter then returned to a GMC truck that he had parked outside the secured area and attempted to flee west on Airline Drive.

Kenner Police Officers located Porter driving the suspect vehicle and stopped it prior to entering St. Charles Parish (26 W. Airline Highway).  Porter exited the vehicle, refused to obey verbal commands, and attempted to remove one of the rifles from the vehicle during the confrontation with police.  It appeared as Porter attempted to remove the rifle from the vehicle; it got caught between the seat and interior panel.  Porter was then taken into custody.  Porter was found to be armed with a .22 caliber rifle, a .40 caliber rifle, and had a .380 pistol concealed within his waist band.

Porter was charged with the crimes of theft of a motor vehicle, attempted carjacking, aggravated assault upon a peace officer with a firearm (3-counts), illegal carrying of weapons, and simple criminal damage to property.  At the time of this press release, Porter remains in custody no bond has been set.

Kenner Police Officers Gregory Alphonso and Teri Pritchett are in charge of the investigation.
