Kenner Police Department investigating officer involved shooting

Kenner - At approximately 7:07 p.m., Friday, November 8, 2013, the Kenner Police Department received a stolen vehicle hit from a License Plate Recognition camera involving a 2009 Nissan Altima, white in color.

Officers responding to the stolen hit located the vehicle in the 3500 block of Martinique Avenue, in Kenner.  The vehicle had been reported stolen during a residential burglary that occurred on October 24, 2013.

A uniformed Kenner Police Officer approached the vehicle and observed a male suspect lying back in the driverís seat with the ignition running, possibly to avoid detection.  The officer attempted to have the suspect acknowledge him while giving verbal commands.  The suspect accelerated the vehicle and rapidly advanced towards the officer.  The officer fearing for his life discharged his duty weapon striking the suspect inside the vehicle.

The suspect has been transported to a local hospital where he remains in serious condition.  This incident remains under investigation.

Chief Steve Caraway urges anyone with information concerning this incident, to call the Kenner Police Department at (504) 712-2222, or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
