Alert citizen who reports suspicious activity helps Kenner Police solve shed burglaries

Kenner - On Wednesday, April 20, 2014, at 10:42 p.m., an alert citizen reported to Kenner Police that she observed a black male, in a dark colored vehicle picking up lawn equipment in the rear alley way of the 1900 block of Idaho Avenue, in Kenner.  The citizen also provided a license plate number to the suspicious vehicle.

Kenner Police responded to the area and discovered that a shed had been burglarized in the 1900 block of Idaho Avenue, and that lawn equipment had been stolen.  Having the information provided by the citizen regarding the license plate, the suspect vehicle (a 2007 Toyota Scion) was found registered in Harvey, Louisiana, but Kenner Police found that the driver of the vehicle had been issued a traffic citation.  The driver at the time the citation was issued resided in the 2100 block of 11th Street, in Kenner.

Officers responding to the 11th Street address found the suspect vehicle and Michael Walker, 46, of 1018 Compromise Street, in Kenner, in possession of the stolen lawn equipment.  As the result of this investigation, Kenner Police were also able to link Michael Walker to one (1) attempt and one (1) additional shed burglary which were reported to Kenner Police on July 23rd.   Both of the July 23rd incidents also occurred in the 1900 block of Idaho Avenue, and involved the theft of lawn equipment from sheds.

Michael Walker was charged with the crimes of attempt simple burglary (1-count) and simple burglary (2-counts).   Michael Walker remains in custody, no bond has been set.  Walker is suspect in other shed burglaries and addition charges are expected.  In addition, Walker has prior felony convictions for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling (9-counts), simple burglary (2-counts), and felony theft.  In 2008 Walker received a 5 years sentence and was paroled from the Department of Corrections in October 2013.

Kenner Police Chief Michael J. Glaser urges anyone with information concerning Michael Walker or these burglaries to call Kenner Police Detective Mike Jackson at (504) 712-2283 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
