Independence man arrested in December burglary / rape

Kenner - An Independence man has been arrested after DNA linked him to a December 2013 burglary / rape.

On December 15, 2013, a 28 year old female victim, residing in the 200 block of Clemson Place, in Kenner reported that she was awakened by a noise in her bedroom and attacked by a black male.  The perpetrator vaginally raped the victim, and then fled her residence.    Entry was gained to the residence through a window.  The victim was transported to Tulane / Lakeside Hospital where she underwent a rape exam and evidence was recovered that was sent to the Jefferson Parish Crime Laboratory.

In August 2014, Kenner Police was notified of a Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) hit, to suspect / parolee, Brandon Watkins, 24.  Watkins was on parole at the time of the burglary / rape for the crime of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling until 5/6/2014.  Watkins had absconded shortly after he was paroled from DOC custody.

In September 2014, detectives with the Kenner Police Department, Tangipahoa Sheriffís Office, U.S. Marshalís Gulf Coast Regional, and Probation and Parole located Watkins residing at a residence located in Tangipahoa Parish, where he was taken into custody concerning parole violations, and a search warrant executed to obtain a Buccal Swab from Watkins to verify the CODIS hit.

On Tuesday, October 14, 2014, Watkins was transferred to the custody of the Kenner Police Department once the CODIS hit was verified.  Watkins was arrested on an outstanding warrant obtained for his arrest for the crimes of aggravated burglary and aggravated rape.

Upon arriving in Kenner, Watkins was interviewed by Detectives George Hoffmann and Harold Pendergast.  It was during that interview, that Watkins confessed to the burglary / rape, telling detectives that he entered the victimís residence through the back window approximately every day for a month without the victimís knowledge.  On December 15, 2013, Watkins advised he entered the victimís bedroom to look for money when the victim awoke, and he wrestled with the victim, and vaginally raped her.

At the time of this press release, Watkins remains in custody, no bond has been set.   In addition to parole detainer has been placed on Watkins.    Kenner Police Chief Michael J. Glaser urges anyone who may have information concerning Brandon Watkins to call Kenner Police Detective George Hoffmann at (504) 712-2398 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.  Kenner Police Department website:  http://www.kennerpd.com
