Convicted felon found in possession of a firearm after vehicle chase

Kenner - A Kenner man with a prior conviction for distribution of marijuana and presently on probation for 2nd offense marijuana until 1/11/2016, was arrested Saturday, after leading officers on a vehicle chase.

On Saturday, January 10, 2015, at approximately 10:17 p.m., Kenner Police Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop; on a 2009 Toyota Corolla, driven by Dernell Nelson, 28, of 407 Morey Street, in Kenner.  Officers attempted to stop Nelson in the 2300 block of Reverend Richard Wilson Drive, in Kenner after he was observed operating the Toyota Corolla in a reckless manner, crossing the roadway lines and traveling above the posted speed limit.

Upon attempting to stop Nelson, he refused to stop the vehicle and led officers on a vehicle chase to the 400 block of Morey Drive, where he attempted to exit the vehicle and became engaged in a physical altercation with officers, resisting arrest.  Once taken into custody, officers found in plain view a loaded .45 caliber handgun.  Due to Nelsonís convictions and that he was on probation for felony possession of marijuana, Nelson was prevented from owning or possessing a firearm.
