One person shot due to New Years gunfire

Kenner - On Friday, January 01, 2016, the Kenner Police Department arrested Brandon Smith, 26, of 1013 31st Street, apartment 17A, Kenner.  Smith was charged with the crimes of aggravated battery, negligent injuring, and illegal discharge of a firearm.

At approximately 12:07 a.m., the Kenner Police Department responded to a complaint of a female shot in the abdominal area at the housing complex, located at 1013 31st Street, in Kenner.  Upon officers’ arrival, they learned that Smith, standing on a 2nd floor balcony shot several rounds toward and empty lot in celebration of New Years.  As a result of his negligent behavior, one of the rounds ricocheted off a metal pole and struck a 40-year-old female victim in the abdominal area as she was exited a vehicle.

The Kenner Police Department obtained a search warrant and located a .380 caliber handgun hidden inside a vent located within the apartment Smith was staying.  Smith was interviewed by Officers Aaron Couturie and Alejando Galvez and admitted to shooting the gun in the air in celebration of New Years.

The victim was transported to University Hospital where she was treated and released.  At the time of this press release, Smith remains in custody no bond has been set.

Kenner Police Chief Michael J. Glaser encourages who may have information concerning Brandon Smith or mat have witnessed this shooting, to call the Kenner Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at (504) 712-2252.
