Two teenagers arrested in Kenner shooting, additional arrests expected

Kenner - Two teenagers have been arrested thus far concerning a shooting that occurred yesterday, (Monday, July 24, 2017), in Kenner.

 Arrested are:

Jamar Jefferson, 17, of 3664 Tulane Drive, Kenner.   Jefferson was charged with the crimes of attempted first degree murder (2-counts), illegal carrying of weapons, and illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities.

Otis Blount, 17, of 1757 42nd Street, Kenner.  Blount was charged with illegal carrying of weapons.

As the result of the shooting, two males 16 and 18-years old received non-life-threatening injuries.  One received a gunshot wound to the right arm, and the second, received a gunshot wound to the femur.

The investigation revealed prior to the shooting two rival groups were at the Woodward Gym, located at 2001 34th Street in Kenner.  While at the gym, an altercation took place between the group which escalated, when rivals allegedly removed firearms and requested that Jefferson step outside.  Jefferson escaped and exited the rear door of the gym when he observed two individuals in the center median of Williams Boulevard (3400 block) that he thought were the individuals who threatened him inside the gym.  Jefferson then removed a .22 caliber handgun which he possessed and began shooting across Williams Boulevard striking them.  After the shooting, Jefferson gave the gun he used in the shooting to Blount who fled north on Williams Boulevard.   The gun which had been placed in a green back pack was dropped by Blount in the parking lot of 4041 Williams Boulevard, when he (Blount) saw police.

Jefferson and Blount confessed their involvement in this shooting.  Additional arrests are expected of at least two  juveniles under the age of 17.  At the time of this press release, both Jefferson and Blount remain in custody, no bond has been set.  Blountís photograph will be released when it becomes available.  Jeffersonís photograph has been included with this news release.

A .22 caliber handgun was recovered inside the green back pack.  The gun was not listed as stolen at the time of the shooting.

Kenner Police Chief Michael J. Glaser urges anyone with information concerning this shooting to call Kenner Police Detective Aaron Savoie at (504) 712-2301 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
