Jefferson man arrested for multiple counts of burglary and theft

Kenner - On Wednesday, June 14, 2017, the Kenner Police Department arrested James Wartelle, 27, who provided the home address of 222 Brooklyn Street, Jefferson.  Wartelle has been charged with the crimes of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling, simple burglary (vehicle), attempted simple burglary (3-counts / vehicle), and theft.

On Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at approximately 03:25 a.m., Wartelle was captured on video surveillance cameras, driving a white 2012 Chevrolet Colorado, in the Driftwood Subdivision on Monterrey Drive.  Wartelle parked his vehicle, exited, and proceeded to walk down the block where he attempted to enter three locked vehicles by pulling on the door handles.  Wartelle was able to burglarize one vehicle, which vehicle door was unlocked, taking loose change and a gold colored ear ring.  Wartelle apparently saw surveillance cameras on a nearby home, ran to his vehicle and fled the area.

On Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at 10:03 a.m., two residents in the 1300 block of 39th Street, was returning home from a doctor’s appointment when they noticed that a white Chevrolet Colorado was parked in front of their residence.  As the residents exited their vehicle and walked up on their carport, Wartelle appeared from the back yard and told the residents “I’m sorry I have the wrong house,” at which time Wartelle entered his truck and fled.  As the residents entered their rear yard, they discovered their rear garage door open.  Further investigation revealed that Wartelle had removed a radio from the garage, in addition, had boxed other property inside the garage.  Fortunately, prior to Wartelle’ s discovery the resident copied the license plate to Wartelle’ s vehicle which was provided to police.

On Friday, June 9, 2017, at 09:56 a.m., Wartelle was again captured on video surveillance cameras driving the white Chevrolet Colorado in the 2300 block of Illinois Avenue, in Kenner.    Wartelle is seen stopping his vehicle, where he exits and removes a lawn edger and weed trimmer from the rear bed of a pick-up truck.

At the time of this press release Wartelle bond which was set at $120,500.00 was released from custody due to prison overcrowding at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.

Kenner Police Chief Michael J. Glaser encourages anyone who may have information concerning James Wartelle to call the Kenner Police Detective Nicholas Engler at (504) 712-2410.
