Threats made to Kenner Discovery School students

KENNER  On February 18, 2019 Kenner Discovery School Principal Patty Glaser reported to the Kenner Police that the school has been receiving calls from concerned parents of reports that a student had threatened to commit a violent act at the school.  It was learned that there have been social media post concerning this threat and that there was a “hit list” with the names of several students who attended the school.  The social media post also claimed the student expressed that he wished to shoot several students and that he had access to a firearm.

Kenner Police are investigating the threat and have identified the student who is alleged to have made the threat.  Several students have been interviewed and police have also identified where the social media post originated which was not from the suspect.

It has been determined that approximately a week earlier the suspect stated to another student that he was upset with a recent breakup with his girlfriend and that he wanted to harm the former girlfriend and her friend.  The suspect indicated that he was going to harm them with a knife.  He also expressed dismay with a recent hospital stay for evaluation over the Christmas break.

That student whom the suspect disclosed the information to relayed what was told to them to another student.  It is believed that second conversation was overheard then was passed along and embellished with the “hit list” of several students and the use of a gun.

Officers have spoken with the suspect and his parents.  The suspect has denied making the threats and stated he has been bullied at the school.

The suspect student, whom is twelve years of age, was not charged that evening.  The parents were allowed to transport their child to Children’s Hospital to be evaluated.

The investigation will be forwarded to Jefferson Parish Juvenile Court for their review and recommendation on charges.

Kenner Discovery School and Kenner Police have coordinated efforts to have additional officers at both campuses over the next couple of days.

Kenner Police Chief Michael J. Glaser urges anyone who has any information about these incidents to call the Kenner Police at (504) 712-2222 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
