Kenner mother arrested for death of her infant child

KENNER  Brandie Froeba, 35, Kenner was arrested for Second Degree Murder related to the death of her six-week-old child.  An autopsy revealed the infant, who was being breastfed by Froeba, died of methamphetamine toxicity and the manner of death was classified as a homicide.

On August 16, 2018, Froeba called 911 to report her six-week-old child was not breathing.  Officers arrived on scene and administered CPR in attempts to revive the child to no avail.  The child was rushed to Ochsner-Kenner Hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

Officers on scene did not observe anything unusual about the condition of the child. However, they observed Froeba appeared lethargic giving the enormity of the situation at hand and slurred her speech when speaking to officers.

Based on the officer’s observations, as part of the death investigation, Froeba consented to a blood sample and admitted she used marijuana the previous day.  She stated earlier that day she breastfed the infant and both she and the child fell asleep.  Awaking hours later she discovered the child was not breathing and called 911.

The following day an autopsy was performed in which preliminary blood analysis showed the presence of methamphetamine in the infant.  Blood samples were sent out for further lab testing.

In October 2018, Froeba’s blood analysis results were returned and tested positive for presence of methamphetamine.

In November 2018, the medical autopsy report was completed and the cause of death was determined to be methamphetamine toxicity and classified as a homicide.

Over the months following the death being classified as a homicide Detective Peter Foltz, the lead investigator, executed multiple search warrants pertinent to medical records and interviewed a number of witnesses.

The investigation revealed that in 2016, when she gave birth to her third child, that child tested positive at birth for Opiates and THC (marijuana).  Froeba was provided literature and counselled as to the dangers of using illicit narcotics while pregnant and as to the dangers of breastfeeding while using illicit narcotics.

Detective Foltz also obtained text messages of Froeba’s referencing her use of “crystal meth.”

Had it not been for the keen observations of the first officers on scene critical blood evidence may not have been obtained early on in the investigation.

Froeba has prior arrests for Possession of Marijuana and Drug Paraphenalia.
