Established in 2006, the Kenner Police Department’s Bicycle Patrol Unit was formed to provide a positive and accessible presence throughout the community. The unit began with two officers and has expanded over the years to as many as six officers. Officers who are assigned to this unit must successfully complete a police cyclist course through the International Police Mountain Bike Association which consists of bicycle handling and patrol techniques.
The main purpose of the Kenner Police Department’s Bicycle Unit is to better serve the community by having the advantage to patrol a neighborhood with more visibility and mobility than in a police cruiser. The bicycle is an excellent tool for the community by providing an easy and approachable officer, but to also prevent crime within the neighborhoods.
The officers in the Bicycle Patrol Unit are assigned a Trek Mountain Bicycle equipped with lighting and audible systems which classifies the bike as an emergency response vehicle.
