The Kenner Police Canine Unit was established in 1992 with only one dog team. Since then, the unit has grown to four dog teams which consist of two Belgian Malinois, a yellow labrador retriever and a Hungarian Vizsla.
In addition to their usual duties, K-9 officers are also dog handlers, meaning that they have to train and care for their canine partner. The responsibilities of a K-9 officer does not end with his shift. The dog is the police officer’s partner not only at work but also at home.
All K-9’s are certified through the National police Canine Association in narcotic detection, K-9 Bas is also certified in patrol/criminal apprehension. The K-9’s live with the handlers and their families, making them more than just a police K-9, but a four-legged family member.
K-9 McKaay is a Belgian Malinois that is assigned to the Kenner Police Department’s narcotics investigation section. McKaay has undergone extensive training and often accompanies officers when a search warrant is executed and aides in traffic stops.
McKaay’s handler says has tons of energy and loves to run, run, run! He also enjoys rolling in the grass and follows his human partner everywhere.
